Sales Policies


Please review these policies carefully as they are the terms of sale that govern your purchases at the Brown Computer Store. They set out your rights and obligations with respect to your purchases, including important limitations and exclusions, such as those in manufacturer product warranties. Your placement of an order at the Brown Computer Store - in store or online, constitutes your agreement that these policies apply to the order, so be certain you understand them before you place your order.


Although the customer is responsible for directly contacting the manufacturer for warranty service and support for all Non Dell, Lenovo or Apple computer systems or products, a knowledgeable computer store staff is always at hand, to assist with your questions or needs, and can even arrange conference calls with most manufacturers' tech support teams. In fact the Brown community of students, staff and faculty has come to view the Brown Computer Store as an excellent resource for their computing needs.


Returns and refunds


The Brown Computer Store wants you to be thrilled with your new purchase. However, given the various manufacturers’ policies imposed upon the Computer Store and in consideration of all our customers, the following are the return and refund terms and conditions for some of our products:



Textbook and Course Pack Return Policy

  • Original register receipt required for all returns
  • Textbooks and course packs must be returned in original condition
  • A full refund will be issued for two weeks (14 calendar days) from the first day of classes or within five (5) days of purchase thereafter.
  • All textbooks and course packs may be returned within three (3) days of the date a course is dropped
  • Fall Semester – NO RETURNS AFTER OCTOBER 15
  • Spring Semester – NO RETURNS AFTER MARCH 1
  • Summer Semester – Course duration defines number of days to return for a full refund (i.e.:  7 week course = 7 days from purchase, 3 week course = 3 days from purchase, etc.)
  • Refunds will be in the same form as original purchase.  Exception:  A 10 day period is required for a cash refund on check purchases.


Campus Shop Merchandise and General Book Return Policy

  • General books and merchandise in original condition may be returned accompanied by a register receipt within 30 days of purchase, for an exchange or refund.
  • Refunds will be in the same form as original purchase.  Exception:  A 10 day period is required for a cash refund on check purchases.


Technology Return Policy

  • Technology items may be returned accompanied by a register receipt within 15 days of purchase, for an exchange or refund subject to the below special conditions.
  • Refunds will be in the same form as original purchase.  Exception:  A 10 day period is required for a cash refund on check purchases.

Special Conditions:

  • Opened or installed software cannot be returned
  • Opened peripherals may be returned but will be assessed a 15% restocking fee
  • Hard drives, flash drives and all Apple peripherals (including iPods) are not returnable unless tested defective within 15 days of purchase.  If tested defective by our service department, the item will be exchanged for the same or equivalent item.  If item is out of stock, it will be replaced within 5 to 7 business days.
  • Computer purchases are covered by manufacturer warranty.  Your system may be returned for replacement within 15 days of purchase if diagnosed DOA (dead-on-arrival) by our service department.  DOA systems must be returned in original packaging and with all contents or a 15% restocking fee will be assessed.  Other than DOA, your system will be repaired under the terms and conditions of the manufacturer’s warranty.  Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products cannot be returned under any circumstance unless such product is DOA.

 

Sales Tax


In addition to the price of your purchases, the Brown Computer Store/Bookstore is required to charge you 7% RI sales tax, unless it is being shipped to another state, in which case shipping fees will apply.

Tax-Exempt Orders

If you place your order on behalf of a tax-exempt organization or individual, please be prepared to provide proof of state tax-exempt status. The organization or individual name on the order must exactly match the state tax-exempt certificate.
